Un-monument | Re-monument | De-monument: Transforming Boston

The Basics

The Mayor’s Office of Arts & Culture (MOAC), via the Boston Art Commission and in partnership with the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University, Emerson Contemporary, the National Center for Afro-American Artists, the North American Indian Center of Boston, Now+There, the Pao Arts Center, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Embrace Boston, and the Friends of the Public Garden, is thrilled to introduce a multi-year Call to Artists for temporary monuments.

We are looking for proposals from artists or artist-led teams for new temporary monuments, as well as “un-monuments” that transform public places to reflect the city’s cultural vibrancy in dialogue with Boston’s collection of existing monuments.

Through temporary art, we can experiment with new ideas, revisit old traditions, and imagine ways to expand and diversify our cultural approach to memory, monuments, and storytelling. Un-monument | Re-monument | De-Monument: Transforming Boston will include temporary artworks commissioned through this open call, as well as artworks commissioned directly by curatorial partners, public talks at The Embrace, and educational content and engagement activities supported by the Mellon Foundation’s Monument Project.

Two Artist Opportunities

In this Call to Artists, we present two distinct opportunities for artists. One is to propose temporary monuments, which must all be free and accessible to the public. Projects may be proposed in any City of Boston neighborhood. The other opportunity is to take an Augmented Reality Artist Workshop and then develop a temporary monument proposal.
